Silicate¹⁴+: Feeding Sponges and Restoring Balance in Reef Aquariums

Silicate¹⁴+: Feeding Sponges and Restoring Balance in Reef Aquariums

Mitchell Ballou |

Silicate is one of the most misunderstood nutrients in reef aquariums. Many aquarists work hard to remove it, but in reality, controlled silicate supplementation can be highly beneficial. Reef Charge Silicate¹⁴+ is a reef-safe silicate solution formulated to provide a clean, consistent source of silicate for two important purposes: feeding sponges and supporting diatom blooms that help stabilize the aquarium ecosystem.

Why Silicate Matters

In the ocean, silicate is naturally present and constantly replenished through geological and biological processes. In closed aquarium systems, however, silicate is rapidly depleted by filtration and uptake from organisms. Without supplementation, this can lead to extremely low or undetectable silicate levels, which negatively affects sponges, diatoms, and other silica-dependent life forms.

Silicate¹⁴+ restores this essential element safely and precisely, allowing reefkeepers to support the organisms that rely on it while maintaining full control over concentration levels.

Feeding Sponges and Siliceous Filter Feeders

Sponges are vital members of a healthy reef ecosystem. They filter dissolved organics, harbor beneficial bacteria, and contribute to water clarity and stability. Many species require a continuous supply of silicate to build and maintain their fibrous, glass-like skeletons.

By dosing Silicate¹⁴+ at low, consistent levels, reefkeepers can provide the nutrients sponges need to thrive and multiply, improving the biological filtration and biodiversity of their systems over time.

Encouraging Diatoms to Control Dinoflagellates

When dosed strategically, silicate can also be used to promote diatom growth—an often misunderstood but extremely useful process. Diatoms are microscopic algae that form brownish films on aquarium surfaces. While many aquarists see this as a nuisance, diatoms can actually serve a beneficial ecological role, especially in systems struggling with dinoflagellates (commonly called “dinos”).

How Diatoms Suppress Dinoflagellates

Diatoms and dinoflagellates compete for similar resources, including nutrients and surface area. Diatoms require silicate to build their silica-based shells (frustules), while most dinoflagellates do not. When silicate is made available, diatoms rapidly reproduce, forming a temporary bloom that physically occupies surfaces and consumes available nutrients. This shift in resource competition leaves less room and food for dinoflagellates, often causing them to decline.

How to Use Silicate¹⁴+

For Sponge Growth

  • Add 1 mL per 10 gallons (38 L) every 2–3 days to maintain around 1 ppm SiO₂.
  • Test silicate periodically with a reliable aquarium test kit.
  • Dose into a high-flow area or sump to ensure even distribution.

For Diatom Bloom or Dino Control

  • Add 3 mL per 10 gallons (38 L) once daily until a diatom bloom forms.
  • Expect a temporary brown film on rock or glass. This is part of the process and will fade naturally once silicate is consumed.
  • Do not exceed 3 ppm SiO₂ in the display at one time.

Once the bloom subsides and dinos are under control, reduce or stop dosing and allow the system to stabilize. Resume low-level dosing only if sponge growth or silicate-dependent organisms need continued support.

Safety and Handling

Silicate¹⁴+ is strongly alkaline. Always wear gloves and eye protection when handling. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water for at least 15 minutes. If swallowed, seek medical attention. Store in a cool, dry place out of reach of children and pets.

Balancing Silicate for a Healthier Reef

Silicate¹⁴+ gives reefkeepers control over a nutrient that’s often ignored but critical for ecological balance. Whether you’re nourishing sponges or using diatoms to help suppress dinoflagellates, Silicate¹⁴+ allows you to restore natural processes that contribute to a more resilient, stable, and biodiverse aquarium.
