Aiptasia Eating Filefish (Acreichthys tomentosus) is a captive-bred oddball reef fish valued for two main reasons: its unusual camouflaged look and its potential to help reduce nuisance Aiptasia in marine aquariums. This species is also commonly sold as the Bristletail Filefish or Matted Filefish. Its mottled green, tan, and brown pattern shifts with mood and surroundings, giving it a cryptic look that stands out in a reef tank without relying on bright colour.
This specimen is already adapted to aquarium life, which matters with filefish. Captive-bred individuals are typically more settled on prepared foods, more familiar with aquarium conditions, and often a better fit for hobbyists who want a functional fish without taking on the same level of uncertainty that can come with wild imports. For many reef keepers, that makes a captive-bred Aiptasia Eating Filefish the more practical choice.
Why Aquarists Choose This Filefish
- Captive-bred and already conditioned to aquarium life
- May help reduce Aiptasia, majano, and similar nuisance growths
- Peaceful with most unrelated fish
- Interesting camouflage, slow browsing behaviour, and real personality
- Usually accepts prepared foods once settled
Important Expectations
This fish should be viewed as a possible biological helper, not a guaranteed cure. Many individuals do eat Aiptasia, but not every specimen starts immediately, and some never become especially reliable for pest control. It is best to buy this fish because you want the fish itself, with Aiptasia control treated as a meaningful bonus rather than the only reason for purchase.
Reef compatibility is best described as reef safe with caution. Some Aiptasia Eating Filefish live peacefully in mixed reefs, while others may nip at zoanthids, fleshy LPS corals, clam mantles, feather dusters, or other easy-to-pick invertebrates. Close observation matters, especially in coral-heavy displays.
Care And Aquarium Fit
Acreichthys tomentosus does best in a mature saltwater aquarium with established rockwork, natural browsing surfaces, and plenty of crevices to move through and retreat into. This species is a slower, more deliberate swimmer than many community fish, so it tends to do best with peaceful to moderately assertive tankmates rather than hyper-aggressive feeders.
- Temperament: Generally peaceful with unrelated fish
- Reef compatibility: With caution
- Tank size: Best in established systems with room to browse and hide
- Tankmates: Avoid aggressive fish that may outcompete or harass slow feeders
- Best placement: Reef or fish-only systems with rockwork, shaded cover, and moderate flow
Feeding And Long-Term Success
Aiptasia Eating Filefish are omnivores and should not be expected to live on pest anemones alone. Once settled, offer a varied diet of finely sized meaty foods and prepared foods suited to smaller mouths and slower feeding behaviour. Good feeding discipline helps maintain body weight and may reduce the chance of exploratory nipping.
- Offer frozen foods such as PE Frozen Mysis Shrimp
- Supplement with quality prepared foods such as PE Pellets Saltwater Fish Food
- Feed carefully around faster tankmates so this fish gets its share
- Keep a backup Aiptasia management plan in mind in case your individual shows little interest
Before You Order
This fish is a strong fit for reef keepers who want a peaceful, unusual captive-bred fish and understand the tradeoff between possible pest control and less predictable coral safety. If you are mixing captive-bred and wild fish, review our Fish Quarantine page for added planning context. For shipping timing and arrival support, see our Shipping page and Arrive Alive Guarantee.

Acclimation
Acclimation
Temperature Match
Place the sealed bag containing the fish or invertebrate into your tank. Allow it to float for 15-20 minutes to gradually equalize the temperature between the bag and your aquarium. This step minimizes stress caused by sudden temperature changes.
Drip Acclimation
Set up a drip acclimation system by using airline tubing. Start a slow siphon from your tank into the bag or bucket containing the fish or invertebrate, allowing water to drip slowly. Acclimate over a period of approximately 30 minutes, gradually increasing the volume of tank water to match salinity and other water parameters.
Check Salinity
Use a refractometer to measure the salinity in the bag or acclimation container. Ensure the salinity matches your tank’s salinity before transferring the fish or invertebrate. Matching salinity helps reduce stress and prevents shock when introducing new animals.
Release Fish/Invert
Gently transfer the fish or invertebrate into the tank, avoiding netting them if possible to reduce physical stress. Allow the animal to swim out on its own if transferring from a container. Discard the acclimation water, as it may contain contaminants.

Foods we use in our fish systems
Farmed, Tested, Trusted
Aquacultured coral, real farm standards, and products we actually use.
New Dawn is built around aquacultured coral, captive-bred marine life, and practical reef support from a real coral farm. Alongside the livestock we grow, we also offer reef products and essentials that reflect the systems, standards, and day-to-day practices behind the farm itself.
Aquacultured Coral
Aquacultured coral is grown in aquarium conditions, which helps it arrive better adapted to life in a reef tank. That often means hardier coral, more predictable performance, and a clearer connection between how it was grown and how it can thrive in a customer’s system.
Farm-used reef products
The reef products we carry are not random add-ons. They are part of the equipment, supplies, and essentials that support our own farm systems and help keep the storefront connected to real reefkeeping practice.
Shipping and pickup
Shipping and local pickup should feel straightforward. We make timing, preparation, and fulfillment expectations clear so you know what to expect before your order is on the way.
Support from the farm
Support should feel direct and practical. From pre-order questions to post-arrival help, New Dawn is built to give reefkeepers a clear path to real assistance when they need it.
