Harlequin Tuskfish

Regular price $349.99

Captive-Bred Harlequin Tuskfish (Choerodon fasciatus) is a bold, personality-rich marine fish known for its blue tusk-like teeth, orange-and-white banding, and confident swimming behavior. This listing is for juvenile fish bred by Bali Aquarich from Australian broodstock, so expect a smaller fish now with stronger adult colour and contrast developing as it matures.

For reef keepers planning a larger display, the Harlequin Tuskfish makes an excellent centerpiece for a fish-only with live rock system or a carefully planned saltwater aquarium without ornamental crustaceans. It is already eating prepared foods, adapts well to meaty diets, and brings a lot of motion and presence to the tank.

Why This Fish Stands Out

  • Captive-bred juvenile with strong long-term colour potential
  • Already feeding on prepared foods
  • High-visibility centerpiece fish with a lot of personality
  • Distinctive adult patterning with blue-edged orange bands and blue teeth

Care Overview

  • Scientific name: Choerodon fasciatus
  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive
  • Adult size: Up to roughly 10 inches
  • Minimum tank size: 125 gallons minimum, with more room preferred long term
  • Diet: Meaty prepared foods, pellets, frozen mysis, Calanus, and other marine-based foods
  • Best setup: Rockwork, caves, rubble zones, open swimming room, and a secure lid

Compatibility And Tank Planning

Harlequin Tuskfish do best with similarly sized tankmates that can handle a confident, active fish. They are usually chosen for larger FOWLR systems because the main compatibility risk is not coral tissue, but mobile invertebrates and very small fish. Shrimp, snails, crabs, worms, and other bite-sized tankmates are poor choices.

As this species matures, it becomes more assertive and generally does best as the only Harlequin Tuskfish in the aquarium. Give it plenty of structure to move through and hide in, but leave open space for cruising. A tight-fitting lid is a smart precaution for a wrasse-like fish with speed and confidence.

Feeding

This specimen is already eating prepared foods, which helps simplify acclimation into an established aquarium. For best long-term condition, rotate a varied meaty diet built around quality pellets and frozen foods such as PE Frozen Mysis Shrimp and PE Frozen Calanus.

Before You Order

Because this is a large, active fish, it is worth reviewing our shipping policy and Arrive Alive Guarantee before checkout. That gives you a clear picture of delivery timing, acclimation expectations, and what to do if there is an issue on arrival.

Acclimation

Temperature Match

Place the sealed bag containing the fish or invertebrate into your tank. Allow it to float for 15-20 minutes to gradually equalize the temperature between the bag and your aquarium. This step minimizes stress caused by sudden temperature changes.

Drip Acclimation

Set up a drip acclimation system by using airline tubing. Start a slow siphon from your tank into the bag or bucket containing the fish or invertebrate, allowing water to drip slowly. Acclimate over a period of approximately 30 minutes, gradually increasing the volume of tank water to match salinity and other water parameters.

Check Salinity

Use a refractometer to measure the salinity in the bag or acclimation container. Ensure the salinity matches your tank’s salinity before transferring the fish or invertebrate. Matching salinity helps reduce stress and prevents shock when introducing new animals.

Release Fish/Invert

Gently transfer the fish or invertebrate into the tank, avoiding netting them if possible to reduce physical stress. Allow the animal to swim out on its own if transferring from a container. Discard the acclimation water, as it may contain contaminants.

Aquacultured Coral

Aquacultured coral is grown in aquarium conditions, which helps it arrive better adapted to life in a reef tank. That often means hardier coral, more predictable performance, and a clearer connection between how it was grown and how it can thrive in a customer’s system.
