Mocha Storm Ocellaris Clownfish is a captive-bred designer strain of Amphiprion ocellaris valued for its rich mocha-to-black base colour, bold white storm patterning, and dark-edged contrast. Each fish develops its own markings, so no two Mocha Storms look exactly alike.

Captive-bred clownfish are typically better adjusted to aquarium life than wild fish, and Mocha Storm Ocellaris are a strong choice for reef keepers who want a hardy, reef-safe fish with more unusual patterning than a standard Ocellaris. They stay a manageable size, usually settle in well, and commonly adapt to prepared foods such as pellets and frozen fare.

Why Choose a Captive-Bred Mocha Storm Ocellaris Clownfish

  • Captive-bred and well suited to home aquarium life
  • Distinctive mocha, black, and white patterning with a unique look on every fish
  • Manageable adult size for smaller reef systems and larger mixed reefs alike
  • Readily accepts prepared foods in most established aquariums
  • Reef safe and well suited to life as a single fish or bonded pair

Care Notes

  • Scientific name: Amphiprion ocellaris
  • Adult size: Typically around 3 inches
  • Temperament: Generally peaceful for a clownfish, though established fish and pairs may defend a chosen area
  • Tank size: A single fish can be kept in smaller reef systems, but a bonded pair or mixed community setup is best given more room and structure
  • Tank setup: Provide stable water quality, rockwork for shelter, and a secure lid
  • Feeding: Offer a varied omnivorous diet including PE Pellets Saltwater Fish Food and frozen options such as PE Frozen Mysis Shrimp
  • Reef compatibility: Reef safe with corals and most compatible invertebrates
  • Pairing: Best kept singly or as a bonded pair; avoid mixing multiple clownfish species in smaller aquariums

Anemone Hosting

Mocha Storm Ocellaris do not need an anemone to thrive in captivity, but some individuals may choose to host one if the aquarium is mature enough to support it. Bubble Tip Anemones are among the most common options in home aquariums. For more on compatible hosting choices, see our Anemone Hosting page.

Who This Fish Suits Best

This is a good fit for reef keepers who want classic Ocellaris clownfish behaviour with more unusual patterning and stronger visual contrast. It works well as a feature fish in a nano-to-medium reef, or as a designer clownfish pair in a larger community setup.

Acclimation

Temperature Match

Place the sealed bag containing the fish or invertebrate into your tank. Allow it to float for 15-20 minutes to gradually equalize the temperature between the bag and your aquarium. This step minimizes stress caused by sudden temperature changes.

Drip Acclimation

Set up a drip acclimation system by using airline tubing. Start a slow siphon from your tank into the bag or bucket containing the fish or invertebrate, allowing water to drip slowly. Acclimate over a period of approximately 30 minutes, gradually increasing the volume of tank water to match salinity and other water parameters.

Check Salinity

Use a refractometer to measure the salinity in the bag or acclimation container. Ensure the salinity matches your tank’s salinity before transferring the fish or invertebrate. Matching salinity helps reduce stress and prevents shock when introducing new animals.

Release Fish/Invert

Gently transfer the fish or invertebrate into the tank, avoiding netting them if possible to reduce physical stress. Allow the animal to swim out on its own if transferring from a container. Discard the acclimation water, as it may contain contaminants.

Aquacultured Coral

Aquacultured coral is grown in aquarium conditions, which helps it arrive better adapted to life in a reef tank. That often means hardier coral, more predictable performance, and a clearer connection between how it was grown and how it can thrive in a customer’s system.
