Amphiprion ocellaris

The Orange Ocellaris Clownfish is a reef-aquarium classic: bright orange, crisply barred, expressive, and easy to enjoy. Its approachable care needs and engaging social behaviour make it a strong first marine fish and an enduring favourite for experienced hobbyists.

Care at a glance

  • Care level: Easy
  • Temperament: Peaceful to semi-aggressive
  • Reef compatibility: Reef safe
  • Suggested aquarium: 20 gallons or larger
  • Water: 23–26°C, specific gravity 1.023–1.026, pH 8.1–8.4
  • Diet: Omnivore

Ideal aquarium

Provide stable water, moderate flow, and rockwork that offers a comfortable home base. Ocellaris Clownfish do not require an anemone to thrive; many choose a coral, rock ledge, or quiet corner as their preferred territory.

Feeding

Offer a balanced marine pellet along with enriched frozen foods such as mysis, brine shrimp, copepods, and finely chopped seafood. One or two varied meals per day are suitable for most established fish.

Compatibility

They work well in peaceful community reefs, but a settled pair may defend its chosen host or nesting area. In most mixed displays, keeping one individual or one compatible pair is the simplest long-term approach.

Good to know: Hosting is instinctive but never guaranteed. Adding an anemone solely for the clownfish is unnecessary, and the anemone’s care requirements should always be considered separately.

Acclimation

Temperature Match

Place the sealed bag containing the fish or invertebrate into your tank. Allow it to float for 15-20 minutes to gradually equalize the temperature between the bag and your aquarium. This step minimizes stress caused by sudden temperature changes.

Drip Acclimation

Set up a drip acclimation system by using airline tubing. Start a slow siphon from your tank into the bag or bucket containing the fish or invertebrate, allowing water to drip slowly. Acclimate over a period of approximately 30 minutes, gradually increasing the volume of tank water to match salinity and other water parameters.

Check Salinity

Use a refractometer to measure the salinity in the bag or acclimation container. Ensure the salinity matches your tank’s salinity before transferring the fish or invertebrate. Matching salinity helps reduce stress and prevents shock when introducing new animals.

Release Fish/Invert

Gently transfer the fish or invertebrate into the tank, avoiding netting them if possible to reduce physical stress. Allow the animal to swim out on its own if transferring from a container. Discard the acclimation water, as it may contain contaminants.

New Ocellaris Clown fish

My new Ocellaris Clown Fish has fit in perfectly in my tank and my Darwin Clown Fish now has a companion to be with and they stick close to one another.

5/5 Conner

Got two clowns recently and was very impressed with the quality of the fish from NDA. They don’t have a huge selection but I’m happy they don’t over stock the tanks. They all look healthy and happy. My clowns are eating well and happy on my tank.

Fish came in healthy and ready to eat! Can’t ask for more than that. Very well packaged which is sometimes a worry with these little guys as they can get trapped if the packer allows the bag plastic to fold. Excellent!

Farmed, Tested, Trusted

Aquacultured coral, real farm standards, and products we actually use.

New Dawn is built around aquacultured coral, captive-bred marine life, and clear farm-backed care guidance from a real coral farm. Alongside the livestock we grow, we carry reef products and essentials that reflect the systems, husbandry standards, and day-to-day practices behind the farm itself.

Aquacultured Coral

Aquacultured coral is grown in aquarium conditions, which helps it arrive better adapted to life in a reef tank. That often means hardier coral, more predictable performance, and a clearer connection between how it was grown and how it can thrive in a customer’s system.
