Captive-Bred Purple Tang (Zebrasoma xanthurum) is one of the most striking tangs available for reef aquariums, prized for its rich violet-blue body, fine darker patterning, and bright yellow tail. This species is active, constantly grazing, and highly visible in the display, making it a standout choice for larger reef systems.
This is a captive-bred specimen from QM Labs. Captive-bred Purple Tangs are a meaningful alternative to wild fish because they are typically better adjusted to aquarium life and are less likely to arrive with the parasite pressure often associated with wild-collected tangs. For many reefkeepers, that makes captive-bred Purple Tangs the more practical and confidence-inspiring choice.
Why Aquarists Choose Purple Tangs
- Bold purple-blue coloration with strong contrast from the yellow tail
- Active daytime swimmer that stays visible in the aquarium
- Reef-safe herbivorous grazing behavior
- Captive-bred origin offers an important advantage for long-term success
Tank Size And Temperament
Purple Tangs need swimming room, strong water quality, and a mature environment with established rockwork for grazing and retreat. A 100-gallon aquarium is the minimum recommended size, with larger systems offering a better long-term fit for adult fish.
This is a semi-aggressive tang. Purple Tangs are often bold and confident, and they may intimidate passive tankmates. They can also become territorial toward other tangs, especially other Zebrasoma species with a similar body shape. In most aquariums, they are best kept as the only tang unless the system is large, thoughtfully stocked, and managed with tang compatibility in mind.
Feeding And Grazing
Purple Tangs are herbivorous grazers and should be offered frequent plant-based foods alongside a varied prepared diet. Ongoing access to algae-based foods helps support body condition, digestive health, and natural feeding behavior.
- Offer dried algae regularly as a staple food
- Supplement with high-quality pellets and frozen foods
- Provide mature rockwork with natural grazing opportunities
- Feed consistently to help reduce stress and food-related aggression
We recommend pairing this fish with New Dawn Nori Sheets as a staple grazing food. These fish are also listed as eating 1mm PE Pellets, which can be a useful part of a varied feeding routine.
Placement In A Reef Aquarium
Purple Tangs are reef-safe and well suited to larger reef displays where they can cruise open areas and return to rockwork throughout the day. Because they are active and assertive, they are usually a better fit for aquariums with similarly confident tankmates rather than very shy or easily stressed fish.
Before You Order
This fish is best for aquarists prepared to provide space, steady herbivore feeding, and careful compatibility planning. If you are ordering livestock for shipment, please review our shipping information and Arrive Alive Guarantee before checkout.

Acclimation
Acclimation
Temperature Match
Place the sealed bag containing the fish or invertebrate into your tank. Allow it to float for 15-20 minutes to gradually equalize the temperature between the bag and your aquarium. This step minimizes stress caused by sudden temperature changes.
Drip Acclimation
Set up a drip acclimation system by using airline tubing. Start a slow siphon from your tank into the bag or bucket containing the fish or invertebrate, allowing water to drip slowly. Acclimate over a period of approximately 30 minutes, gradually increasing the volume of tank water to match salinity and other water parameters.
Check Salinity
Use a refractometer to measure the salinity in the bag or acclimation container. Ensure the salinity matches your tank’s salinity before transferring the fish or invertebrate. Matching salinity helps reduce stress and prevents shock when introducing new animals.
Release Fish/Invert
Gently transfer the fish or invertebrate into the tank, avoiding netting them if possible to reduce physical stress. Allow the animal to swim out on its own if transferring from a container. Discard the acclimation water, as it may contain contaminants.

Foods we use in our fish systems
Farmed, Tested, Trusted
Aquacultured coral, real farm standards, and products we actually use.
New Dawn is built around aquacultured coral, captive-bred marine life, and practical reef support from a real coral farm. Alongside the livestock we grow, we also offer reef products and essentials that reflect the systems, standards, and day-to-day practices behind the farm itself.
Aquacultured Coral
Aquacultured coral is grown in aquarium conditions, which helps it arrive better adapted to life in a reef tank. That often means hardier coral, more predictable performance, and a clearer connection between how it was grown and how it can thrive in a customer’s system.
Farm-used reef products
The reef products we carry are not random add-ons. They are part of the equipment, supplies, and essentials that support our own farm systems and help keep the storefront connected to real reefkeeping practice.
Shipping and pickup
Shipping and local pickup should feel straightforward. We make timing, preparation, and fulfillment expectations clear so you know what to expect before your order is on the way.
Support from the farm
Support should feel direct and practical. From pre-order questions to post-arrival help, New Dawn is built to give reefkeepers a clear path to real assistance when they need it.
