Astraea Turbo Snails are one of the most practical clean-up crew inverts for reef aquariums. These small herbivorous snails spend their time grazing nuisance algae from rockwork and glass, making them especially useful in established tanks dealing with film algae, diatoms, and light to moderate hair algae.
They are reef safe, peaceful, and easy to mix with most other clean-up crew animals, but they do best when added to a stable aquarium that already has enough natural algae to support them. Like many marine snails, they are sensitive to sudden parameter swings and should be acclimated carefully.
Why Add Astraea Turbo Snails
- Excellent grazers for film algae, diatoms, and some hair algae
- Useful on both rockwork and aquarium glass
- Reef safe and peaceful with corals, fish, and most invertebrates
- A practical choice for building out a balanced clean-up crew
What To Expect In The Aquarium
Astraea Turbo Snails are best used as working members of the clean-up crew, not just decorative inverts. They spend most of their time moving across hard surfaces in search of algae and biofilm. In tanks with heavy algae growth, they can make a noticeable difference. In very clean or newly established systems, they may run short on natural food and need supplemental feeding.
They are best suited to mature aquariums with stable salinity and good rock structure. If algae becomes limited, offer dried seaweed or other herbivore-friendly supplemental foods rather than assuming the tank will feed them indefinitely.
Important Care Notes
- Best for established marine and reef aquariums
- Reef safe: yes
- Diet: herbivorous grazer
- Sensitive to copper and unstable water conditions
One of the biggest practical points with Astraea-type snails is that they may struggle to right themselves if they fall onto their back. It is worth checking on them during the first few days after introduction and helping them over if needed. They also appreciate secure rockwork and stable footing.
Acclimation And Compatibility
Like other marine snails, Astraea Turbo Snails should be drip acclimated carefully before release. Avoid adding them to systems with copper exposure or poor water quality. They are generally peaceful, but they are still vulnerable to animals that pick at snails or prey on invertebrates.
