Acclimation

Temperature Match

Float the sealed bag containing the coral in your tank for 15-20 minutes. This allows the coral to gradually reach the same temperature as your aquarium, minimizing temperature-related stress.

Prepare and Dip Coral

To ensure the health and safety of your new coral, prepare a dip solution using tank water and a coral dip product, following the dip’s instructions for dosage and timing. This precautionary dip helps protect your tank by eliminating any potential hitchhikers. Keep an eye on the coral during the process to confirm it’s responding well.

Rinse in Tank Water

After the dip, rinse the coral thoroughly in a separate container filled with clean tank water. This step removes any residual dip solution, preventing it from entering your display tank and ensuring the coral is safe to be introduced.

Introduce Coral

Carefully position the coral in your tank, ideally on a rock or suitable location based on the coral’s needs. Make sure the placement allows proper flow and lighting according to the coral species. Monitor the coral for the next few hours to ensure it adjusts well.

Green Alveopora is a Stunner!

I was very pleasantly surprised with this coral. I have always liked the “Flowerpot Corals” but twenty years ago I tried to keep Gonioporas on two separate occasions, but despite my best efforts both of them died. The system that I was running at that time was fairly cutting-edge for 2004. A “Berlin-style” aquarium with high-quality Liverock, multiple powerheads for water movement, good protein skimming, frequent waterchanges, and a pair of 250 watt Metal Halides (one 10,000k Daylight and one 14,000k “Reef Blue”).
When I visited NDA last year and saw the cute little green “Flowerpot” I remarked that I thought they looked cool but they are incredibly difficult to keep. But Mitchell explained that it was actually a related genus that looks remarkably similar but is much easier to keep. I was hopeful that I would be able to keep it, but since my 2024 aquarium is fundamentally still very similar to my 2004 aquarium, I was prepared for the worst.
Well, the kind of control we can now have over our water chemistry is what completely sets our hobby ahead now. Much higher quality Synthetic Saltwater Mixes, Additives, and coral foods are making possible what was previously near-impossible. That water chemistry, along with modern LED lighting and my hang-on the tank Refugium producing and flooding the tank with Zooplankton have made my latest attempts at Coral Husbandry almost easy.
I mounted our little Alveopora Frag on a golfball-sized piece of white Caribsea rock that I drilled a whole in the top of for inserting the plug. It has really taken off!!! It started out marble-sized with about 8 “Flowers” and now it is Mandarin Orange sized and has a couple hundred “Flowers”. It is growing so fast that the spot I put it in out on the sand away from everything is now too tight for it…….. Time for a bigger tank!!!!
Seriously though, the Alveopora is a really beautiful and rewarding coral to keep in your reef.
