A complete protocol to reclaim your reef from dinoflagellates
Dinoflagellate blooms (“dinos”) often appear in aquariums where nutrients have been driven too low and the biome has been stripped of competitors. The Dino Buster Bundle is a curated kit designed by New Dawn Aquaculture to restore a healthy nutrient balance, seed helpful micro-fauna, and recolonize the tank with probiotic bacteria. Each component has a specific role in the battle.
Why nutrients matter
Running a tank too clean can starve corals and beneficial microbes. Low nitrate and phosphate stunt zooxanthellae photosynthesis and macroalgae growth. Nitrify supplies an ACS-grade nitrate source so that nitrate is measurable again; adequate nitrate supports photosynthesis and balanced microbial activity, and deficiency can allow dinoflagellates or cyanobacteria to dominate. Phosphorize is a matching phosphorus source; adequate phosphate is critical for microbial stability, nutrient export, and coral health, and prolonged deficiency can lead to pale tissue, stalled nitrogen uptake, and persistent dinoflagellate outbreaks. Using these supplements to bring nitrate to approximately 10–20 ppm and phosphate to around 0.1–0.2 ppm makes the water chemistry unfavorable for dinos while supporting corals and macroalgae.
Outcompete dinos with diatoms and pods
- Silicate 14+: Silicate is a key nutrient for diatoms; they use it to build their silica shells. Studies and hobby experience show that adding silicate promotes a diatom bloom which suppresses dinoflagellate populations, including Large-Cell Amphidinium. Target a silica level around 3 ppm by dosing Silicate 14+ directly into a high-flow area—do not dilute. Test silica every few days; maintaining the diatom bloom long enough for them to repopulate is the goal. A temporary brown film (“ugly phase”) on sand and glass means the silicate is doing its job.
- Tigriopus Copepods (Reef Pulse): Tigriopus are large harpacticoid copepods (~2 mm) that live on rock and sand and eat detritus, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and dinoflagellates. Their grazing helps keep dinos in check while converting them into a nutritious food source for fish and corals. Acclimate to tank temperature, then release into the refugium or display at night when fish are less active. Refrigerate the bottle and oxygenate daily until use; add a few drops of live phytoplankton if the water clears.
Rebuild and stabilize the biome
Once the diatom bloom has out-competed the dinos and the Tigriopus population has had time to graze them down, replenish beneficial bacteria to return the system to long-term stability. Palustris Live Bacteria (Bacto Fuel) is a culture of the purple non-sulfur bacterium Rhodopseudomonas palustris. It naturally helps remove ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, and organics; provides corals with usable nitrogen compounds and protein- and B12-rich nutrition; breaks down detritus; boosts gut health of fish and corals; and suppresses pathogens. Because it colonizes coral tissue, rockwork, and the water column, dosing Palustris after the “dirty” phase helps repopulate the biome with beneficial bacteria. Shake the bottle and add 1 mL per 5 gallons into a high-flow area daily or weekly.
How to use the Dino Buster Bundle
- Bring nutrients back. Test nitrate and phosphate. Dose Nitrify and Phosphorize to raise nitrate by ~8 ppm and phosphate by ~0.3 ppm per 1 mL per gallon. Start with partial doses, test after 24 hours, and repeat small, frequent doses until you reach moderate levels. Avoid large swings and always dose into a high-flow area.
- Seed the diatom bloom. Dose Silicate 14+ into a high-flow area without dilution. Maintain silica around 3 ppm; this feeds diatoms so they can out-compete dinos. Expect the glass and sand to turn brown—this temporary bloom creates an inhospitable environment for dinoflagellates. Continue nutrient dosing so the bloom persists. Monitor silica, alkalinity, and other parameters regularly.
- Introduce pods. Acclimate Tigriopus to tank temperature. Turn off pumps briefly and pour pods into the refugium or display at night. Store remaining pods in the refrigerator, oxygenating the bottle daily and feeding a few drops of phytoplankton until all are used.
- Recolonize beneficial bacteria. After the diatom bloom has taken hold and dinos start to disappear, begin dosing Palustris. Shake well and add 1 mL per 5 gallons into a high-flow area daily or weekly.
- Be patient. The battle against dinoflagellates is rarely immediate. Expect an “ugly phase” with brown diatom films and possible cyanobacteria blooms. Maintain steady nutrient levels, keep dosing silicate until diatoms are well established, and allow the Tigriopus population to grow. Continue testing nitrate, phosphate, and silica; once dinos have disappeared and the diatom bloom recedes, slowly reduce silicate dosing and rely on Palustris and your pod community to keep the system balanced.
What’s included
- Nitrify (Reef Charge) — 16 fl oz. ACS-grade nitrate supplement; raises nitrate (~8 ppm per mL) and corrects overly clean tanks.
- Phosphorize (Reef Charge) — 16 fl oz. Precision phosphorus supplement; raises phosphate (~0.3 ppm per mL) and prevents pale corals and dino outbreaks.
- Silicate 14+ — 8 oz bottle. Concentrated silicate solution; feeds diatoms to out-compete dinoflagellates.
- Tigriopus Live Copepods (Reef Pulse) — 8 oz bottle. Large harpacticoid copepods that consume detritus, diatoms, and dinoflagellates and provide a rich live food source.
- Palustris Live Bacteria (Bacto Fuel) — 16 oz bottle. Purple non-sulfur bacteria culture that purifies water, breaks down detritus, supplies natural probiotic nutrition, and recolonizes your reef.
Safety and storage
- All supplements are for aquarium use only; avoid contact with eyes and skin and keep out of reach of children.
- Store Nitrify and Phosphorize between 15–30 °C, out of direct sunlight.
- Refrigerate Tigriopus pods, oxygenate daily, and use within the recommended period.
- Palustris is shelf-stable for six months and does not require refrigeration.
With the Dino Buster Bundle and a little patience, you can transform a nutrient-starved tank plagued by dinoflagellates into a balanced, vibrant reef. Follow the step-by-step protocol, test regularly, and embrace the temporary blooms that signal your reef’s recovery.
