Blood Red Fire Shrimp (Lysmata debelius) is a classic reef invertebrate known for its deep red body, bright white spotting, and long white antennae. Also sold as Fire Shrimp, Blood Shrimp, or Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp, this species brings strong contrast to reef rockwork and a very different look from the more commonly kept skunk cleaner shrimp.
Once established, a Blood Red Fire Shrimp often claims a shaded cave or overhang and may use that area as a cleaning station for nearby fish. It is usually more visible at feeding time, after lights dim, or when it feels secure in a mature aquarium with plenty of structure. If you want a cleaner shrimp with bold colour and a slightly more secretive, cave-oriented personality, this is one of the best-known options in the hobby.
What to Expect
- Intense red coloration with crisp white markings and antennae
- Cleaner-shrimp behaviour, including opportunistic fish-cleaning activity
- Reef-safe compatibility in most mixed reef systems
- Best display in tanks with caves, ledges, and lower-light retreat areas
- Usually peaceful with fish and corals, but less tolerant of other shrimp in tight quarters
Care Overview
Blood Red Fire Shrimp are best kept in a stable, established saltwater aquarium with secure rockwork and consistent water quality. Like other ornamental shrimp, they do poorly with sudden parameter swings, copper exposure, and neglected water quality. Gentle acclimation and long-term stability matter more than chasing exact numbers.
- Temperament: Peaceful with most fish and reef invertebrates
- Reef compatibility: Generally reef safe
- Activity pattern: Often crepuscular to nocturnal, especially when first introduced
- Habitat preference: Caves, overhangs, crevices, and shaded rockwork
- Diet: Meaty prepared foods, frozen foods, scavenged leftovers, and natural cleaner behaviour
Feeding And Behaviour
Although Blood Red Fire Shrimp may clean willing fish, they should not be relied on as a primary form of parasite control. In captivity, they do best when regularly offered suitable foods such as mysis, finely chopped meaty foods, and other quality marine fare. A well-fed shrimp is more likely to settle in confidently and maintain better body condition through molts.
This species is often described as peaceful, but it can be territorial with other shrimp of the same kind unless kept as a compatible pair or given a larger, well-structured aquarium. It is usually a better fit as a single show shrimp than as part of a loose group.
Good Fit For
- Reefkeepers who want a striking ornamental shrimp that is still practical
- Tanks with peaceful to moderately active community fish
- Established reef systems with stable salinity and low stress
- Aquariums with enough rock structure to let the shrimp feel secure
Before You Order
As with most marine invertebrates, Blood Red Fire Shrimp are sensitive to abrupt changes in salinity and chemistry. Careful acclimation, stable parameters, and avoidance of copper-based treatments are important for long-term success. Proper iodine, calcium, magnesium, and trace element balance can also help support normal molting in a healthy reef system.
