Montipora foliosa are a thin plating species of Montipora. This coral usually needs to encrust a solid base on the rockwork before it starts to plate. While most plating species of Montipora are referred to as capricornis in the reef aquarium hobby the most common and most easily identifiable species of plating Montipora is Montipora foliosa.
These corals can be very difficult to identify as frags, for most species we need to grow out a full colony to be able to properly identify them. However, when it comes to Montipora foliosa a dead giveaway is the rows of polyps between raised ridges. These rows of polyps are also perpendicular to the outer rim of the plate.
Foliosa are fast growing, encrusting, and plating corals that will eventually form a large spiral vase that can shading the area below. These corals often form large colonies quickly in an aquarium due to their fast growth rates. We recommend you give them plenty of space as they will be aggressive towards their neighbours.
