Trochus spp.
Trochus Snails are peaceful clean-up crew grazers with cream-and-maroon conical shells. They work across rockwork and aquarium glass, grazing film algae, diatoms and other soft growth. An established reef with enough natural food gives these useful herbivores a suitable place to forage.
These Trochus snails are bred in house at New Dawn Aquaculture. We breed them ourselves, bringing another aquacultured grazer to our clean-up crew selection alongside our Stomatella and Collonista snails. For reef keepers who value aquacultured livestock, these are raised right here at New Dawn.
Place each snail upright on a stable surface after acclimation. Trochus can often right themselves, but do not assume a newly introduced or stranded snail will manage without help. Check fallen snails and gently return them to an upright position when needed.
Provide enough established algae growth to support the snails you add. In very clean systems, offer a small piece of dried marine seaweed or an algae-based sinking food. Watch for acceptance and remove anything uneaten before it deteriorates. Stock according to the food available rather than relying on a fixed snail-per-gallon rule.
Trochus may reproduce in established aquariums, although spawning does not guarantee that young snails will survive to adulthood.
Marine snails are sensitive to sudden changes in salinity and temperature. Acclimate carefully and maintain consistent conditions after introduction. Avoid copper-based medications in their aquarium, and keep them away from pufferfish, triggerfish, snail-eating wrasses and other animals that hunt snails.
